You will acquire an advanced, multidisciplinary understanding of the major contemporary environmental challenges facing the world, and the different disciplinary and theoretical perspectives used to explain them. You will also undertake a supervised research dissertation, or may apply to complete a project-based report with an NGO, government department, political party or business over the spring and summer. Your performance will be assessed through a combination of coursework and written/practical examinations. You will be encouraged to explore, to take risks, to be self-reflexive and critically engaged. You will engage in depth with your specialist area through a series of workshop/seminars, related self-led, option-based learning exercises and critical reading. Running in parallel to these classes you will have a series of Personal and Professional Development workshops with alumni artists working in the different areas. There will be Supervised Rehearsals and Tutorials in which a tutor attends and observes your company, offers feedback on your work, consults you on your process and guides you in areas where you may have questions. These will be timetabled and organised in advance and it is the responsibility of the company to make sure they use the time with the tutor wisely. All the theatre-makers analysed on the module illustrate how today questions of identity and ethnicity in France and in its former colonies, are live, unresolved, and fluid. As the module material is in English, we will be considering what a theatre history beyond “national” borders means, through the example of the different artists whose work will be considered (from Mickiewicz to Staniewski; or between Kantor and the Theatre of the Eighth Day). Through targeted critical readings, you will situate their analyses of these performances within recent scholarship on the efficacy of political performance in a globalised, postmodern world. Each company, therefore, will comprise of a team of specialists in a range scenographic practices. As individual audience members, artists, participants, or students, we engage our imaginations and creativity to help us understand ourselves and the world around us. This degree is ideal if you have a passion for using performance for social change. You will learn performance and facilitation skills, while exploring the ideas that underpin them.
All students are given access to the DPIR and to the open-plan workspace during working hours and regular users may submit an application for twenty-four hour access, subject to attendance at a health and safety induction. The DPIR contains around 40 hot desks that any graduate student may use on a casual basis. Each desk has an internet connection and gives you access to major social science software packages, and to email, file storage and other facilities.

This module responds to these questions with an introduction to third wave feminism and queer theory. This lecture/ seminar series introduces you to key aspects of modern and postmodern thought, culture and theatre. It aims a) to examine historical and cultural contexts, and b) to explore and analyse the theoretical and culture concerns and practices which have been understood as modernist and postmodern.
